Branching allows you to skip from one answer to another
question.
Three general forms of branching are available: Simple, Multiple, and
Looping. All branching instructions are entered by clicking on the Branch
icon . Branching is unidirectional downward,
meaning that branching only progresses down toward the end of the survey.
You cannot branch backward toward the top of the survey.
Simple Branching:
Simple branching is used with single answer multiple choice questions.
Simple branching based on a single answer question means that one answer
to the question is selected and the respondent is then taken to the branch
location assigned to that answer. The survey then continues onward from
that point to the end of the survey.
Multiple Branching:
Multiple branching is used with multiple answer multiple choice questions,
rank order questions, or constant sum questions. Multiple branching based
on a multiple answer (example: check all that apply) questions means that
based on the answers given, multiple branches are taken to separate sets
of questions. The branches are initiated sequentially, one after another.
Set up of a multiple branch is as follows:
Question1 ( Which brands of computers do you own? answer options are Apple,
Dell, HP, IBM, which we want to have branch respectively to questions
2, 6, 10, and 14). Click the branching icon and select the branch to question
(2,6,10,14) that goes with each answer.
Branch from Apple to Question 2 continues through questions 3, 4, and
5. At question 5, place a page break:
Branch from Dell to Question 6 continues through questions 7, 8, and 9.
At question 9, place another page break.
Branch from HP to Question 10 continues through questions 11, 12, and
13. At question 13, place another page break.
Branch from IBM to Question 14 continues through questions 15, 16, and
17. At question 17, place another page break.
Do not select the "Enable Multiple Branch" option. This option
is for "Looping".
If the brands Dell and IBM are selected, the respondent
is taken to questions 6, 7, 8, 9 and then to questions 14, 15, 16, 17,
and then to the next question, number 18. The order of presentation is
in the same sequence as the master question order for question 1 (even
if the question 1 answers are randomized).
Looping:
The "Looping" option is available for multiple response questions.
Here, the same question is asked repeatedly, once for each item selected
in the multiple response question. For example, if we were asking a question
about satisfaction with the respondent's computer brand (and used piping
to insert the brand name into the question), the respondent would see
a seemingly different question (with a different brand name), but would
in actuality be seeing the same question. When a long multiple answer
question is followed by the same question, looping eliminates the need
to add the same question over and over again, once for each multiple answer
option. To create looping, select the "Enable Multiple Branch"
in the branching instructions and assign the same question to each answer
option. You will also want to insert the brand in the Piping Text area
and use the ${piping_text} key in the question to be repeated. The ${piping_text}
key is recognized by the computer and replaced by the brand name.
